Wisdom Teeth Removal Lincoln NE: Smile. You’re in Good Hands.
The wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop. They typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. In some cases, wisdom teeth don’t require removal if they grow in completely, remain functional, painless, cavity-free, and surrounded by healthy gum tissue in a hygienic environment. However, they require regular professional cleaning and annual check-ups with periodic x-rays to monitor for changes, including potential tooth decay or oral health issues.
When a tooth doesn’t fully grow in, it’s considered “impacted.” This occurs when there isn’t enough room for the tooth to break through the gums. Studies show that 90% of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth that requires removal. Impacted wisdom teeth can damage neighboring teeth, cause infections, and affect the alignment of your teeth due to overcrowding in the back of your mouth near the jawbone.
Additionally, impacted teeth are difficult to clean, allowing oral bacteria to accumulate. This can lead to gum disease or more severe health issues, as bacteria can enter the bloodstream and impact vital organs like the heart and kidneys. In rare cases, cysts or tumors can form around the base of the impacted tooth, hollowing out the jaw and damaging nerves, roots, and surrounding areas. To avoid such complications, it’s essential to consult an oral surgeon about wisdom teeth removal.
With a thorough oral examination and x-rays, Dr. Henry evaluates the position of your wisdom teeth and identifies potential problems. Most patients are first assessed during their teenage years by a dentist, orthodontist, or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Early intervention can prevent future complications such as dry sockets, misalignment, or infections.
All procedures are performed under appropriate anesthesia, ensuring maximum comfort for patients. Dr. Henry offers various types of sedation dentistry, allowing patients to choose the best option for their needs. Whether you require wisdom tooth extraction, tooth removal, or other oral surgery, Dr. Henry’s expertise ensures a smooth and efficient experience.
